An advanced materials company can present strong properties, a sustainability case and good laboratory results. The industrial buyer asks what changes in their process if they adopt the material, and who accepts the consequences.
That question sits between scientific performance and commercial adoption. A brand that leads with the chemistry leaves the buyer to build the bridge alone.
Name the first specification you can meet
Industrial buyers buy a component, an ingredient or an input that meets a specification under real manufacturing conditions. Write the first application in operational terms.
The first application, in the buyer's terms
- What the material replaces
- The process it runs through
- The incumbent it competes with
- The qualification the buyer requires before an order
Then list the conditions under which each performance claim holds. A tensile strength, a barrier property or a thermal measurement becomes commercially meaningful when the buyer can set it against the relevant application, standard, cost and service life.
If the material is still in qualification, say so on the page. A development material presented as production-ready may draw early attention and then meet difficulty in every technical review that follows.
Translate each property into the buyer's comparison
A phrase such as "superior performance" hides the comparison the buyer has to make. For each property you claim, fill in one line.
| Property | Compared with | Under which conditions | Why it matters here | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The measured property | The reference material the buyer uses today | The test method, the sample and the conditions | The effect on the buyer's product, line or cost | Internal test, third-party test, customer trial or qualified |
A line for a hypothetical recycled polymer in a moulded part might read like this. Impact strength, compared with the virgin grade the moulder runs today, measured with the method the buyer's specification names, matters because it decides whether the part passes the buyer's drop test, and stands at internal test status.
Keep the underlying data and methods one click away, and state the limitations beside each result. A line with an empty cell shows where the evidence work starts. Use "drop-in replacement" only where the buyer can see the conditions under which it holds.
Build the adoption case in three layers
Three layers of an adoption case
- Performance
What the material does, how it was tested and which results are reproducible.
- Integration
Whether it runs through the customer's process, under which conditions, and what changes in equipment, storage, quality assurance or end-of-life handling.
- Economics
The total cost in use, including conversion, waste, throughput, logistics and failure risk, set against the current alternative.
The technical team usually holds answers for the first layer and partial answers for the second. State that uneven readiness layer by layer, so the buyer's technical reviewer can see what is proven and what the next test covers.
Investors run the same comparison. Danny Brown, a partner at MaC Venture Capital, described how his fund reads a company that improves on existing solutions in an August 2024 interview. "We consider why this company is a better solution and the switching costs for customers." Performance answers the first half of that sentence. Integration and economics answer the second.
Choose the application that gives you the next proof
The most impressive application may sit several qualification cycles away. Prefer an opening market where the buyer has a recognisable need, a realistic test path and the authority to support development. The first sale or qualified trial should produce evidence the next buyer can use, such as a passed standard, a qualification record or a reference in a related process. A bespoke experiment that nobody can repeat gives the company a story and little else.
Dustin Bowers, founder of PLAEX, which makes interlocking building blocks from recycled materials, described this kind of sequence in a February 2024 interview. "We're entering the market as a landscape product. We're doing retaining walls and other non-occupied structures while we continue to move through the certification process, which is costly and time-consuming." That is one founder's plan at one moment. The first application asks less of the buyer's approval process, and the certification work for occupied buildings continues alongside it.
This is a market-selection decision before it is a communications decision. Your Technology Has Five Markets gives the full worksheet for comparing applications.
What a first-adopter page holds
A webpage or one-page summary for a potential first adopter can be short. It should give a technical buyer enough to decide whether to ask for a sample.
A first-adopter page
- The application, named in the buyer's terms
- A few relevant properties, each with its method and reference material
- The evidence status of each result
- The expected qualification route and its first step
- Manufacturing readiness and the volumes available now
- A route to request a sample or a technical discussion
Ask the buyer to evaluate one application. A capability list for a whole materials platform leaves them to design the first use themselves, a pattern 8 Ways a Technical Company Makes Itself Harder to Buy describes.
Name the open issues, then check what is blocking
Map the open issues with the prospective buyer across qualification, reliability, safety, supply, unit economics and production integration. Give each one a next test, an owner and the decision it will allow. After a trial, separate what it proved from what the supply plan and qualification still have to prove, as Why Successful Climate Tech Pilots Do Not Always Become Purchases sets out. Presenting implementation risk to industrial buyers and How to Present FOAK Risk cover that register in depth.
The map also tells you what kind of problem you have. If supply continuity is the main blocker, a new tagline leaves it in place. If the buyer has a workable qualification route and still cannot follow the offer, clearer positioning and evidence architecture can help.
An early commercial story makes the first adoption decision small enough, clear enough and evidenced enough for a buyer to consider it seriously. When the material is clear and the adoption decision has still stalled, The Belief Diagnosis finds where the decision stops moving before anyone rewrites the page.
Questions people ask
How can a circular materials company communicate switching costs?
Compare the current material or process with the new one on quality, line changes, downtime, qualification, reliability, supply and cost. Switching is a business decision as well as a performance comparison. Keep the next test bounded, and state who carries each risk during it.
How do we position a carbon utilisation product against incumbent materials?
Position against the material or process the buyer uses today, on performance, price, integration, compliance and production constraints. Carbon utilisation usually describes the process, and the buyer still needs a benefit in its own terms. Verify the carbon claim, and show the product suits one specific use.
How should a new material company explain reliability and specifications?
Show specifications, performance ranges, the conditions behind each comparison, sample availability, compatibility tests, quality management and supply readiness. Novelty matters to the buyer once the material meets its requirement. Set out each step from a sample to qualification.
