Hiring, alignment, and partnership
Three more contexts, all inward-facing: hiring, team alignment, and partnership. These run on the stories about who you are and where you are going.
The stories that build a team
Hiring runs on Vision and Purpose, and the mechanism is one you met in Part 1: people understand their own lives as stories, and a role is attractive in proportion to the chapter it offers. The job description states the work; the interview tells the story the work belongs to. And here is the useful part: the story is also a filter. The candidates you most want are precisely the ones who choose a narrative over compensation alone, which means the story is working even when it loses you someone who only wanted the salary. Partnership conversations open on Origin and Purpose, establishing mission alignment before the roadmap, so a partner can tell whether the alignment is real or performed. And team alignment lives in the deep versions themselves: give them to your team with the private layer taken out, in their own voices, not as a script to recite. Depth distributes. A salesperson who has read the full deep Customer Story opens conversations differently from one handed a two-paragraph persona, even if they never use a word of the original.
The difference in practice. The standard job description: "We are looking for a Senior Ecologist with five or more years of experience in carbon project methodology, proficiency in remote sensing tools, and the ability to work across multiple concurrent projects." Accurate. Forgettable. The Story System version opens on Vision and Purpose before it lists the role: "We are building the infrastructure that makes restoration pay, because the land cannot wait for the economics to catch up on their own. The ecologist who joins now will be one of the people who proves the model works, which is the kind of evidence the whole sector needs." Then the role. Then the requirements. The candidates who apply to the first version want a job. The candidates who apply to the second version want the chapter. Those are different people, and the story is how you find the right ones before the interview.
