The sales conversation
The sales conversation uses three stories too, but a different three, in a different order, for a different reason.
A different three, a different order
The Customer Story opens, their world from inside, and you honour the stop, you end at the longing and let it sit. The Product Story answers, but only once the recognition has landed, because now it is answering a longing the customer has felt rather than describing features to someone who has not. And Impact closes, as the evidence that the promise has been kept before, for someone like them. Now here is the part founders resist, and I want to state it plainly because you will be tempted: the Origin Story almost never belongs in a sales conversation. Founders love telling it. But nobody evaluating your product cares where you grew up, not until they already care whether you can help them. Lead with their world, not your history. Again, sequence is strategy.
Here is the contrast. The weak opening: "We are an AI-powered land restoration platform that helps landowners unlock ecosystem value across degraded agricultural land." The room hears a category, a feature, and a target market. Nothing lands. The Story System opening: "You have farmed the same land for years, and the field that gives you least is the one you walk most. Three consultants have told you what it could become. Nobody has told you what to do first." Three sentences from inside their world, and the rest of the conversation changes, because you are now answering a problem they feel rather than describing a product they do not yet care about. That is the Customer Story doing its work. Honour the stop. Let the longing sit. Then the Product Story answers it.
