Twenty-five centuries of evidence

The question of why story works is not new. Three thinkers, separated by more than two thousand years, arrived at essentially the same answer from completely different directions. Together they make the most complete case I know for why story is not a communication technique but a human necessity.

Three forces, one vehicle

Aristotle came first. In his Rhetoric, written in the fourth century BC, he identified the three components of persuasion.

What made that revolutionary was not naming the three. It was his observation that none of them works alone. An argument full of facts and logic but no emotion falls flat, because the audience does not feel why it matters. An emotional appeal with no credibility collapses, because the audience has no reason to believe the speaker. And credibility with no logic leaves people uncertain what they are even being asked to believe. He was watching people try to persuade each other in person, with no slides, no platforms, no features to hide behind. The observation has not aged a day.

Story, when it works, carries all three at once. And here is why this matters for the specific work we are doing. The Origin Story is the ethos story. It is the one that establishes your credibility, not through a list of credentials, but through the lived experience that created your conviction. When I told you about my son, I was not claiming to be qualified. I was letting you watch the moment the qualification was earned. That is ethos done the way Aristotle meant it.
