Lesson 6.4 · The TED-style cut
How to write a TED-style talk that spreads an idea
You learn to cut a talk to spread an idea, covering the ask, how much evidence to keep, who the hero is, and what more time changes.
A TED-style talk exists to release an idea that outlives the room. The audience includes everyone the people in the seats will repeat the idea to. The room still forms a view of you, whether you are credible and whether you are selling. The talk itself turns on one question, whether the idea is worth carrying to someone outside the room.
Three changes follow. You remove the ask, because a request for a vote, a meeting or money turns the idea into a transaction, and the room feels it. You make the idea the hero of the talk. You end on the idea spreading and trust the room to carry it out. Evidence still matters, because the idea has to be true and the room has to believe it. Keep the evidence that makes the idea believable. Pitch proof such as traction, revenue and pipeline serves a transaction, and here it makes you look like a salesperson.
A real idea-led talk can run from five minutes to eighteen, depending on the slot. More time deepens the same spine around a single argument.
Key ideas.
- A TED-style talk exists to release an idea that outlives the room, built for everyone the audience will repeat it to.
- A TED-style talk removes the ask, because requesting a vote, a meeting or money turns an idea into a transaction.
- Evidence in a TED-style talk serves the idea, so keep what makes it believable and trim the traction and revenue that make a speaker look like a salesperson.
- A TED-style talk makes the idea the hero and ends on the idea spreading, trusting the room to carry it out.
Questions.
How long should a TED-style talk be?
A TED-style talk commonly runs five to eighteen minutes, depending on the slot. TED asks for eighteen minutes or less and says short talks can work as well. More time deepens the same spine around a single argument. The course's own example cuts run four minutes so readers can compare them side by side.
Should a TED talk include a call to action?
A TED-style talk removes the ask. Requesting a vote, a meeting or money turns the idea into a transaction, and the room feels it. The talk ends on the idea spreading and trusts the people in the room to carry it to others. The audience still forms a view of the speaker, and the talk keeps the idea at its centre.
How much data should you use in a TED talk?
Use the evidence that makes the idea believable, and let it serve the idea. The idea has to be true, and the room has to believe it. Pitch proof such as traction, revenue and pipeline is usually too much for this room. It serves a transaction and makes the speaker look like a salesperson.
